Literacy Project/Language Experience
| Status: Ongoing | Begin date: Oct 1, 2000 | End date: No set date |
Description
Language experience is one of the nine areas of literacy that have become the focus of attention for the Clerc Center. Research has shown how deaf children develop connections between what they sign and what is written. During language experience activities, students experience an event or story together, then dictate their experience to an adult who translates the story into appropriate written English on chart paper. The adult then uses the text for reading instruction. A video and manual, Leading From Behind: Language Experience in Action, was published in 2002. Workshops demonstrate how to use language experience successfully with deaf and hard of hearing students.
