Literacy for Latino Deaf and Hard of Hearing English Language Learners
| Status: Ongoing | Begin date: February 1, 2002 | End date: No set date |
Description
The purpose of this project is to review and describe research literature on the acquisition of literacy by deaf and hard of hearing second language learners. The researchers have identified and reviewed relevant literature within a socio-cultural framework, which assumes that the language and literacy acquisition of Latino deaf students takes place within and is influenced by several levels of social context and interactions including: the deaf child and his/her primary caretaker(s) and siblings, the family and other members of the Latino culture and community, the family and Deaf community, the family and the education system for deaf children, and the family and members of the mainstream U.S. culture. The researchers will produce a research report that summarizes the findings and makes recommendations for research practices.
