Empowering Deaf Communities in Latin America

Status: Ongoing Begin date: October, 1999 End date: No set date

Description

This project is an ongoing collaboration to pilot a "deafness enhanced" participative leadership model which promotes a shared agenda of self-empowerment and "leadership in action" through deaf peer mentoring. The mentoring occurs via exchanges and service learning opportunities within deaf communities in the U.S. and in Latin America. In 2006, this leadership model--which is known as IDP (International Deaf Partnerships)--was expanded to Africa. A student interned at the Beua School for the Deaf in Cameroun for eight months. The model is currently in the process of being established in Colombia. Preliminary conversations are underway to add Puerto Rico and Nicaragua as well as other Francophone countries in Africa. In the spirit of our partnership with deaf communities in Latin America, we are currently working on a multimedia anthology documenting the lives of deaf people in Argentina, Costa Rica, and Mexico. The anthology will be published in 2007.
