Description
The Cochlear Implant Education Center was established within the Clerc Center at Gallaudet University in fall, 2000, to address onsite program development, national resource support, and research on issues related to cochlear implants. In FY 2005 the Center established and implemented a collaborative relationship and service provision arrangement between Kendall School's Parent Infant Program and the Joseph P. Kennedy Institute in Washington, D.C. to provide quality childcare for deaf and hard of hearing children in the District of Columbia. Center staff conducted in-service training for Kendall School teams regarding integration of spoken language strategies in the school's curriculum. Two family education nights on cochlear implants were presented. In collaboration with researchers at James Madison University, a study of the spoken language and sign language development of children following cochlear implantation was continued, as was a study of the responses to short-term auditory stimulation through hearing aid use in the contra-lateral ear of pediatric implant users.
