Literacy Project/Literacy - It All Connects

Status: Ongoing Begin date: Sept 1, 1995 End date: No set date

Description

The Clerc Center has developed its literacy program based on nine strategies for encouraging the development of reading and writing skills of deaf and hard of hearing students from preschool through high school: 1) Reading to Students, 2) Language Experience, 3) Shared Reading and Writing, 4) Guided Reading and Writing, 5) Writer's Workshop, 6) Research Reading and Writing, 7) Independent Reading, 8) Dialogue Journals, and 9) Logs and Journals. During FY 2001, a poster depicting the nine areas of literacy was produced, and development began on the presentation, including the concepts of each of the nine areas, and the research with deaf and hard of hearing students. During FY 2002, this presentation was conducted numerous times, and the content, design, and delivery was fine tuned. A train-the-trainer program related to Literacy-It All Connects was carried out in FY 2003. In FY 2004, presentation continued at other schools and programs in the United States and an on-line course was developed. These presentations have proved beneficial wherever they are conducted. Three more workshops were conducted in FY 2005.
