Investigation of Japanese Culture and Aesthetics as Guest of Master Potter, Eiichi Mitsui

Status: Completed Begin date: June 7, 2005 End date: November, 2005

Description

The investigator completed a 2 week trip to Japan in June of 2005 as the guest of master potter and Gallaudet artist-in-residence, Eiichi Mitsui. (Note: Mr. Mitsui and his wife are both deaf and have run a very successful family business creating beautiful Kutaniware for many years. Mr. Mitsui's work is revered as the best in the entire prefecture.) The investigator toured the Ishikawa Prefecture photographing pottery villages, museum exhibits, an annual festival in Kanazawa, the tea ceremony, and scenes of daily life.

A Scholar's Forum was presented to the Gallaudet community in November, 2005, called Japanese aesthetics and the tea ceremony. Included were slides of the investigator's trip to Japan, a discussion of Japanese culture, and an abbreviated Tea Ceremony for all participants. This new information on Japanese culture and the Tea Ceremony was integrated into the ART: 220 Asian Ceramics course curriculum in the spring, 2006 semester.
