An Examination of the Reading Strategies and Behaviors of Skilled Deaf Adult Readers

This dissertation project is designed to gain a better understanding of the reading attitudes, strategies and behaviors of skilled Deaf adult readers. Participants in this study are ten second-generation deaf women who are or have been teachers. This study aims to get the perspective of these knowledgeable participants about what happens when they read. The study is investigating attitudes, behaviors and reading strategies through the use of a questionnaire, interviews, and think-aloud reading activities. Interviews were videotaped and transcribed and are being analyzed for trends and patterns in responses. To date 9 of 10 interviews have been conducted and transcription of the data is occurring. September 30th is the anticipated completion for all interviews and transcriptions. Data analysis will begin upon completion of data transcription.
