Sources of the French Deaf Enlightenment
| Status: Ongoing | Begin date: June 1, 2005 | End date: No set date |
Description
This project is designed to enhance understanding of the intellectual and cultural scene in the beginning of the French Deaf Enlightenment (late 18th and early 19th century) by supporting research in the library and archives at the Institut Nationale des Jeunes Sourds (INJS), the original Deaf residential school in Paris, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, and Bicetre. The particular focus of this historical research will be on the writings of Pierre Desloges, the first known deaf person to author a text (1779) and the Deaf student and faculty protests at INJS. Such work will contribute to contemporary Deaf historiography as it counsels us to ask, "What sort of Deaf community formation and activism has taken place outside of, or in resistance to, formal educational establishments?"
