This paper will be presented at the conference entitled "150 Years on Kendall Green: Celebrating Deaf History and Gallaudet." It is sponsored by Gallaudet University, and will be held in April of 2007. The researcher's presentation will trace the strong, positive influence that Gallaudet University had on Emmanuelle Laborit and through her on her French compatriots, both hearing and deaf. It will focus on the genre of deaf autobiography, particularly Laborit's The Cry of the Gull (1998) and will discuss Laborit's impressive evolution from troubled child to deaf activist, actress and current manager of the International Visual Theater.
