History Through Deaf Eyes

Status: Ongoing Begin date: October 1, 1995 End date: No set date

Description

History Through Deaf Eyes, a traveling social history exhibition, completed a 12 state tour in FY 2005-2006. The final two stops were the University of Iowa in Iowa City and the Nashville Public Library in Tennessee. Each host planned local events such as exhibition opening receptions, film series, lectures, and performances. Over 415,000 people visited the exhibition while on tour.

In 2003, Gallaudet University began working with WETA, a PBS affiliate television station, to produce a two-hour documentary based on the Deaf Eyes exhibition. A national advisory group was formed, and filmmaker Larry Hott of Florentine Films/Hott Productions, Inc. was hired by WETA to create the film. Six Deaf filmmakers were contracted by Florentine Films/Hott Productions to create topic-specific vignettes for the HDTV documentary, scheduled to be broadcast nationally in the spring of 2007. An on-air Deaf Filmmakers Showcase is under development with WETA for local broadcast in conjunction with the documentary.Multiple public programs are being planned in conjunction with the documentary broadcast, and the American Library Association is promoting the project during their mid-year meeting.

In spring 2007, Gallaudet University Press will publish a book, Through Deaf Eyes: A Photographic History to be released in conjunction with the documentary. Primary authors are Jack R. Gannon, Douglas C. Baynton, and Jean L. Bergey.
